FURTHER to Simon Desborough's letter (Proposed development in Settle, Craven Herald letters, February 4) and the response from Craven District Council.

I agree completely with Mr. Desborough's comments and note with considerable cynicism Craven's reply.

It is, however, clear from their response that plans exist and are actually at an advanced stage, consultation having taken place “with a heritage adviser, a conservation officer and ward members."

Most residents of Settle have no knowledge of what these plans now might be.

My memory of the consultation event held in late 2019 was one of locals' annoyance and disbelief.

Certain proposals for the development of the Kirkgate/Ashfield Car Park were displayed at this meeting, but I understand that these have now been considerably amended to include a three storey building across the car park entrance.

This may be rumour, but, given the lack of detail regarding what the actual plan is how do we know?

What this area needs is a functioning toilet block for visitors and residents of Settle.

If there is to be development it should be in keeping with the conservation area and perhaps include the Tourist Information Centre, toilet unit and some affordable housing whilst retaining the utility of the cobbled garden area and tree and not compromising the car park access.
