THE NORTHERN ECHO is looking for two outstanding reporters to join our talented team.

The Great Daily of the North is looking for two journalists - one to join our agenda-setting news team and another to join our sports team.

The successful candidates will both be looking to develop their skills, take their careers to the next level, and generate the contacts that will keep them ahead of the game, while providing a variety of stories for Newsquest's flagship daily title and its associated titles.

Editor Karl Holbrook said: "The Northern Echo has been setting the news agenda in the North-East for more than 150 years and never has that work been as important as it is today.

"At this really important moment we are experiencing some of the fastest growing digital audiences and strongest circulation figures in the industry – but at our heart is amazing journalism you can trust and this is a chance for two outstanding individuals to play a part in writing the next chapter of our history."

In news, we are looking for a journalist who lives and breathes digital, understands the needs and pressures of a modern newsroom, can spot news trends and react to them fast, as well as get their teeth into the sorts of campaigns and investigations worthy of our distinguished history.

You will be comfortable running a live blog on breaking incidents as you are peeling back the curtain on the secret, hidden lives of people that have been forgotten about during the pandemic.

Outstanding trainees (with NCTJ prelims, including shorthand) will be considered alongside senior reporters.

In sport, we are looking for a digital journalist to help make our already extensive coverage of North-East sport even better.

To be considered for the role, you’ll be passionate and knowledgeable about all aspects of North-East sport, but in particular you’ll be football crazy and have an in-depth understanding of the North-East football scene and know what makes North-East football fans tick.

You’ll be at home in the world of digital media, and attuned to how to create and publish a story online and optimise its chance of reaching the widest possible audience.

One minute you’ll be digging into Newcastle United’s latest transfer targets, the next you will be assessing Neil Warnock’s tactics or reporting on the Black Cats’ weekend prospects. Either way, you’ll be finding exciting, innovative ways to get to the heart of North-East sport.

The job would suit an outstanding trainee (with NCTJ prelims, including shorthand) looking to cut their teeth on one of the country’s leading regional news brands.

  • If either of these sound like the job for you, email your CV and a brief covering letter to the editor at karl.holbrook@newsquest.co.uk by March 8.
