A FREE, online event aimed at celebrating the lives of the navvies (navigators) who built the railway between Settle and Dent in the 19th century is due to be held on Saturday, February 27.

End of the Line - Settle’s navies in words and song is a joint project between Holy Ascension Church, Settle; the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and the Settle Carlisle Railway Trust.

Plaques dedicated to the memories of the navvies who died while working on the railway, between 1869 and 1876, can be found at both Holy Ascension Church in Settle and at St Leonards, Chapel-le-dale.

An event spokesperson said: “Their deaths raise intriguing questions about the men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the building of the railway. The number of deaths is an appalling statistic, and every one of them was someone’s son and possibly a husband and father.

“Their descendants and relations should know who they were and the contribution they made to this iconic railway and to life in Settle. “

The free, online event will celebrate the navvies, their lives and their lasting achievement. It starts at 3pm on February 27. Email:events@settlechurch.uk for the joining details.
