THIS old photo is dated around early 1800 and is a row of some of the three-storey houses in Union Square, Skipton.

They were family homes, some of them large families, but were demolished as part of the remodernisation of Skipton.

They were situated off Broughton Road/Belmont Street between Victoria Mill and Back Bridge Street.

A lot of the old houses were not regarded suitable for modern living; most not having adequate plumbing or bathroom facilities.

There was certainly plenty of room to hang the washing outside, however.

Fortunately we have access to photographs showing us where Skipton residents were brought up as children or where their grandparents lived.

Picture reproduced by kind permission of the Ellwood and Rowley families.
