A THREE day weekend open air cinema event in the grounds of Skipton Castle has been moved to April following the announcement of the Government’s roadmap out of coronavirus.

Movies Under the Stars, in the castle car park, was to be held at the end of this month, but will now be held in the middle of April - following the lifting of the ‘stay at home’ rule, and the first weekend after the re-opening of non-essential shops.

Organised by Skipton BID and produced by Blue Sky Cinema, more than 900 people have taken part in voting for what will be shown, with the line up of nine films including The Lion King, Mamma Mia! and Bohemian Rhapsody.

It is due to take place on Friday, April 16, Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18, with three showings per day. Viewing will take place from cars, which will be parked at Covid-safe distances and with only 60 vehicles allowed at each screening.

Geraldine Thompson, Skipton BID manager and director, said: “ After a year when all events in the area have had to be cancelled due to the on-going pandemic, we are delighted to bring the first a Covid-safe event to Skipton in April and support the business and visitor economy in town.

“Thanks to the professionalism and planning between Blue Sky Cinema, Skipton Castle and ourselves, we could swiftly move the event dates to become a celebration of our town re-opening out of lockdown.

“Visitors to the cinema event will be able to go shopping, enjoy the town’s friendly and safe atmosphere, relax by the canal, with the added bonus of the High Street market on the Friday Saturday, and also enjoy Skipton’s wonderful food and drink establishments that are open with outdoor seating capacity.”
