THIS old building at the high street end of Newmarket Street was occupied by HR Brown Chemist - though empty at the time - James Duckworth and Henry Watson & Sons.

It was taken in the 1950s and was demolished to make way for a modern building, currently Savers.

The passage on the left led to Birtwhistle’s Yard and the building just pictured on the right is the former Woolworths store, now Yorkshire Trading Company.

Readers remember the old tall-necked bottles on display in the chemist’s window which were filled with coloured liquids of red, green and blue.

The traditional chemist had rows of wooden cupboards with gold lettering and brass handles.
