THIS picture is of the junction of Raikes Road and Grassington Road.
There is no date guide to the picture, but it is a far cry from today where the grand houses on the right are almost completely obscured by trees.
To the lower left of the picture, just out of sight, is the back entrance to Ermysted’s Grammar School and nearby St Monica’s Convent.
School cross country runs usually ended with sprints down Grassington Road to this back entrance.
One respondent said he remembered runs to White Hills or Bog Lane and in winter lathered his legs with Elliman’s rub - ‘like the pros did’.
Picture: Rowley Ellwood collection.
