FORMER City striker Jon Stead has brought the curtain down on his impressive career, retiring after Harrogate's 4-1 defeat to Cheltenham on the final day of the 2020-21 League Two season.

Stead, who started out at the Bantams' West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, played in the Premier League for both Blackburn and Sunderland, before forging an impressive EFL career.

After time at the likes of Sheffield United, Ipswich and Coventry, he returned to Huddersfield in 2013.

It was then when he came to City on loan, netting on the final day of the 2013-14 League One season in a 2-1 win at Tranmere.

Though he briefly went back to Huddersfield, he returned to City in October 2014, scoring a fortnight after rejoining in a 2-1 defeat to Doncaster.

He netted a further five goals in the league that season, but it was his FA Cup exploits which really caught the eye.

Stead scored in the opening two rounds against Halifax and Dartford, before he grabbed a goal in the impressive 4-0 win over Millwall in the third round replay.

The zenith of his City career came in the next round at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

Stead put in a stunning display, and scored City's opener, as they came from 2-0 down to stun the soon-to-be crowned Premier League champions with a 4-2 win.

He was not done there either, and netted the crucial second goal to down then-Premier League side Sunderland in round five.

City's journey ended in the quarter-finals with a replay defeat, but Stead's place in Bantams folklore was secure.

After waving goodbye to City that summer, he spent four seasons at Notts County, netting over 50 goals for the club.

And the final chapter of his career saw him rock up at fairytale club Harrogate, with his goals last season guiding them to the unthinkable, a place in the Football League.

He also won a trophy in his final week at the club, as Harrogate won the rearranged 2019-20 FA Trophy final against Concord Rangers at Wembley.

Not a bad way to bow out.
