SKIPTON financial company Computershare, which quit it's head office base at Gateway House, in Gargrave Road, last year, is coming back.

Back in August the company announced it was moving to premises in Crossflatts.

A spokesman at the time said: "Like any business, we regularly review our operation footprint to ensure it is fit for purpose. We’ve recently been reviewing our use of two, below-capacity office buildings in Yorkshire. We can now confirm that we have sufficient capacity to accommodate all our staff at our offices in Crossflatts, including all 484 that have been based in Skipton.

"As a result, when we begin to reduce homeworking measures, we do not intend for staff members to return to the office in Skipton.

“While we may be exiting the premises, we’re not exiting the area, and will continue to have significant numbers of employees based locally."

Today, however, the Herald has learned the finance firm is coming back.

Former employee Brian McDaid, who is current assistant general secretary with Aegis the Union said: "Whilst this is a positive development locally, as it will return a significant number of employees back into the local community, it will be very frustrating for those who were affected by the Gateway House closure at the end of last year.

"The priority for employers can be seen to be their cost base and employees seen as just numbers when decisions like this are made, but the impact on people when they face disruption to their working lives is difficult and emotive and that needs to be the primary focus for these decision makers.

"We will be working closely with the business to understand their strategy to ensure disruption like this to our members, their families and the wider community does not occur again, and Computershare are confident that they have long-term sustainability to protect jobs and develop locally, to benefit all."

Computershare said it will make a statement in due course.
