Airedale

Beekeepers: Airedale Beekeepers Association has highlighted a petition to the UK Government which aims to close a loophole in import regulations that could allow a devastating pest, the small hive beetle, to arrive in the UK through packages of bees brought into the UK through Northern Ireland.

Most bees imported into the UK come from southern Italy, where small hive beetle has been endemic since 2014. A rigorous border inspection regime existed prior to December 2020. With Brexit, the rules changed: packages of bees cannot currently be imported into Great Britain, but they are still allowed to be brought into Northern Ireland – from where they can be transferred to the UK mainland without restriction.

The small hive beetle can multiply to huge numbers within infested colonies, where it eats brood, honey and pollen, destroys the wax combs and causes fermentation and spoiling of the honey.

Previously, an effective inspection regime at points of import had prevented it from becoming established in the UK.

A national petition has been launched by the British Beekeeping Association (BBKA) which seeks 100,000 signatures, which will force a debate on the issue in Parliament.

Chris Hardy, chair of Airedale Beekeepers said: “Unless this loophole is closed, unscrupulous importers will be able to move bees into the UK without control. T

“There is no effective treatment for small hive beetle – in the US at least 20,000 colonies were destroyed within two years of its discovery and the potential impact on British beekeeping could be devastating.”

She added, “I would ask anyone who is concerned to please sign the petition and encourage the Government to take action on this urgent issue.”

The petition can be found online at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/577603 and runs until September.

Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This Sunday is the Fourth Sunday after Trinity. We are reminded this Sunday about judging other people. Judging by the comments underneath newspaper articles we all love to sit in judgement over others and generally are not shy in giving our opinion. However, Jesus reminds us that, before we judge other people, we should remember our own failings at the same time. All too often, we are guilty of the self-same sin that we condemn in others. As Jesus said “let him who is without sin, cast the first stone”. Try thinking about this before you rush to judge others this week.

Church news: The Church is now open every Sunday for the 10.30 am service. Places have to be booked via the Church Office. The Tower remains open for private prayer but the Church is closed during the week, For the audio services, the weekly sheet and magazine please look at: www.boltonpriory.church

Kirkby Malham

Church news: Those who were unable to visit St Michael’s church this past weekend to see an exhibition as part of the Walter Morrison Festival have a few more chances in coming weeks.

The exhibition explains Morrison’s involvement with the church which was completely rebuilt in the 15th Century and whose restoration between 1879-1881 was carried out by acclaimed Lancaster-based architects, Paley and Austin.

Morrison is buried in the churchyard under a simple headstone. The next exhibitions will be held on July 3; August 14-15 and September 18-19.

Just recently, the church has seen more improvements thanks to support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, grants from the Headley Trust and North Craven Heritage Trust and the generosity of local people and visitors.

This summer also sees Kirkby Malham welcome a new resident priest, the Rev Dr Sue McWhinney.

“St Michael’s is delighted to host the Walter Morrison exhibition and to be open for visitors to our beautiful church,” said Rev McWhinney.

“Walter Morrison made a considerable contribution towards the cost of restoring our 15th Century church, ensuring that its unique character was retained.

We are thankful for his generous support and pleased to be part of the festival celebrating his life and achievements.”

Parish Hall: On the same weekends as the church exhibition, Kirkby Malham Parish Hall is open from 11am-4pm when visitors can discover Morrison’s passion for education and philanthropy.

These exhibitions are among a series of five running until September 30. The others take place at Giggleswick School Chapel, Malham Chapel and Skipton Library.

From October 8-December 23, all exhibitions come together at The Folly in Settle. For information on venue opening dates, visit: https://thefolly.org.uk/walter-morrison-festival/
