IN support of Alan Hickman’s letter (Craven Herald letters, July 1) about the proposed reorganisation of the county and district councils he is right to draw a comparison with the imposition of Police and Crime Commissioners in 2012.

It is not clear whether these commissioners have any impact on the accountability or performance of the Police but it is obvious that voters are apathetic to their role, with a turnout of 25 per cent at the last election.

I doubt very much whichever model of unitary authority is imposed on us will result in better services, more accountability or more engagement with local democracy.

The energy and resources going into the consultation and subsequent reorganisation would be far better spent improving the services the authorities provide. There is much room for improvement.
