CAVE rescue has reminded people taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks to make sure they are properly prepared after a walker reported herself lost on Ingleborough at the weekend.
The walker called the police at about 10pm on Saturday. The phone quality was poor before dropping out altogether, and there had also been an earlier call from the group she was with.
Cave Rescue Organisation controllers were unable to contact her and there was no response to a Phonefind message. Two team members set off on the reverse route in search, while others went to the Sulber and Moughton areas.
It was then found she had reached Horton car park and the team was stood down.
A CRO spokesperson said;” We’d like to thank the Golden Lion in Horton for their offer to assist the walker when it appeared they may have been stranded in the village overnight. Luckily a relative came to their assistance and collected them.”
The spokesperson added: “Further investigation of the circumstances that led to the call-out highlighted some important reminders for staying safe on the hills and how to #BeAdventureSmart.”
Walkers should make sure they have the right gear, should know what the weather will be like and whether they have the right knowledge and skills for the day.
“Always make sure your mobile phone is charged but don’t rely on it for communication and navigation. Carry a map of the area and a compass, and know how to use them. Walking in the hills can be unpredictable, have contingency plans and make sure those who need to, know them and are able to follow them if needed.”
