NEWS was a big thing back in the ‘olden days’ before social media, radio and TV.
Most people relied solely on their daily or weekly newspaper for world news.
This picture taken in Keighley Road, is dated around the early1880s.
Kitchener is on one of the billboards saying he is off to Egypt so this ties in with the earlier date, we think, as he went to reconstruct the Egyptian Army.
Standing in the doorway is newsagent Henry Lister who used to collect papers from the station at the crack of dawn.
He is also said to have cut hair and mended umbrellas. He worked extremely long hours with help from his wife, Amelia.
Picture: Rowley Collection.
