HAVING lived in Settle for 60 years and reared a family, all of whom live in Craven, I am well aware of the lack of facilities for the youth of our community who are not traditionally athletic.

Therefore, I was disappointed to read the response to the proposal for a skate park in the Millennium Garden by residents of The Wickets many of them new to the area. (New move in skate park saga opposed, Craven Herald, July 15).

Young people today suffer considerably more pressures growing up than my generation did and a facility which provides a chance to engage in an inexpensive leisure activity must surely be considered as beneficial to the community as a whole.

Drink and drugs are sometimes given as the default activity for the youth of today. Surely the proposal for this facility could, in a small way help to combat this.

To suggest that using a skateboard park renders that person unable to negotiate a familiar road is pure piffle.
