A TEENAGER has died after getting into difficulty in the River Wharfe at Grassington.

Police were called by the ambulance service at about 7.45pm yesterday evening, July 22, to a report of a 19-year-old man in difficulty in the river.

The man has been named locally as Ben Marklew, from Skipton.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Servie said crews from Skipton and Grassington attended at Station Road, Grassington, at 7.18pm to reports of a person missing in the river after jumping in.

Crews pulled the male from the river at Linton Falls just a short distance downstream and handed him over to the ambulance crews.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "Yorkshire Ambulance Service received an emergency call at 7.09pm yesterday (Thursday, July 22) to reports of a male in difficulty in the River Wharfe at Grassington.  

"An ambulance, clinical supervisor, air ambulance and Mountain Rescue were dispatched to the scene. 

"Despite the tireless efforts of all those responding to the incident, the man sadly died."

Enquiries are ongoing and no further details have been released.

Last year Bradford teenager Mohammed Bilal Zeb drowned after getting into difficulties at Linton Falls on July 31.
