FOLLOWING a site meeting at the Millennium Garden, Settle, on July 16 attended by town councillors and members of the public, it was revealed that the proposed development of the site for our young people does not include a skate park. It is a limited area, small pump park. This includes a grassy area with Tarmac tracks radiating over a few raised bumps.

It is this what our youngsters are expecting?

It will obviously be more challenging to cycle through the existing flower bes in the garde as is the present practice.

I commend the town council for working to provide this much needed facility, but agree with county councillor David Staveley that the sensible route is to lobby North Yorkshire County Council for the development to be adjacent to the swimming pool.

Alternatively, the town council might consider the purchase of a plot of derelict land along the riverside which would make an ideal pump park, similar to the one in Ingleton.

Relating to Scottie Brewster's comments (Craven Herald letters, July 22) that many of the apartment owners in The Wickets were new to the area, she may be surprised to know that over 60 per cent of the occupants are either born, worked or have spent much of their life in Settle or the surrounding area. We are part of this community, and want the very best facilities for our young people.

We also think that spoiling a well used, tranquil area near the centre of town is a misappropriation of funds.
