Church news: Holy Trinity Church is open to visitors Monday-Friday, 10am-12noon, for you to come in for a chat or to light a candle. This Thursday there will not be a Holy Communion at 10am.

On Wednesday’s from 10am-1pm, there’s a pop-up shop inside Trinity and the Café will be serving refreshments. There will be a good quality clothes rail, bric-a-brac stall and food bank collections; bring what you can, take what you need.

Rev Sheena and Rev Claire will also be saying Morning Prayer at 9am Monday to Friday and Evening Prayer at 5pm in St James’ Chapel, Holy Trinity Church. These include short services of Bible readings and prayers for the day. There will also be Prayer during the day at 12:30pm - Tuesday and Thursday in St. Mary le Ghyll Church, Barnoldswick. The Coach House at Ghyll Church, continues to be open every Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday 10:30am-3:30pm serving tea, coffee and cakes.

This Sunday is our combined All Age Service at Holy Trinity Church, Barnoldswick at 10:30am - Creationtide begins. There are no services at Ghyll or Bracewell this Sunday.

Anyone is welcome to come in the churches and join in these prayers, services and events.

Carleton

Social Club: September 11 sees the welcome return of solo country singer Jim Tracy to the Iron Horse CMC at Carleton Social Club. With a wide range of traditional country songs Jim is always a popular artist and the club is looking forward to another great night of live country music. Doors open at 7.15pm and tickets are £6 on the door.

Clapham

Lecture Group: Clapham Lecture Group is holding its much delayed AGM on Tuesday, September 14 at 7pm in Clapham Village Hall. Following the AGM Ken & Brenda Pearce will be speaking about their journey to the South Pacific and back. The new season of Clapham Lectures stars on Tuesday, September 21 7pm in Clapham Village Hall. The full programme will be revealed at the AGM but speakers include Dr Ian Saunders making a welcome return, two talks by local landowners on the challenges facing the Dales with climate change and Brexit, and two new speakers: Peter Logan and astronomer Martin Lunn. Cononley

Cononley Gala: Welcome return of the much-loved community and fundraising event on Saturday, September 11 starting on the Playing Field at 1.15pm with the ocean-themed fancy dress judging. (Entries to be in the arena by 1pm.) Then follows the family oceans procession featuring Loud Minority samba drummers, the crowning of the gala queen and presentation of prizes for fancy dress winners.

A whole afternoon of traditional events is in store with dog show, Cononley Singers, kids’ tug-o-war, children’s races, fell race and egg-throwing. There’s also the tea room, book stall raffle, crocker smash stall, bottle tombola.

Then 7.30pm-midnight – ‘Ocean Sunset Party’ featuring No Big Deal, hog roast and bar. Tickets on sale, £14 from the Shop & pubs.

Cowling

Carpet Bowls: The Cowling Companions group holds carpet bowls for fun and exercise on Fridays at Cowling Village Hall from 2pm to 5pm. £2.50 including refreshments. Beginners welcome. Some woods available or bring your own.

New2U clearance sale: NEW 2U, at St Andrew’s, Walton Street, Cowling, is staging its ‘end of season clearance sale’, which will commence on Thursday, September 2 and continue until Thursday, September 16 inclusive. All items in the ‘shop’ will be sold at half their marked price. Hundreds of good quality bargains available.

In the hall will be the monthly promotion for September, - which will be soft furnishings, lighting, pictures and accessories. All proceeds will be donated to local causes and charities. Opening times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-4pm, Saturdays 10am-12noon.

Gardening on the Peggy Wilson Field: People are invited to come along each Saturday between 2pm and 4pm to help work on the School’s wildlife plot on the Peggy Wilson field (opposite the school). No experience necessary, but any horticultural wisdom would be welcome. The aim is to support the School and get the garden bursting into bloom. Many tools will be available on site, but you might want to bring your own gardening gloves (if you think you’ll need them).

Church news: St. Andrew’s church. There will be a service of Holy Communion at Kildwick on Sunday (5th), starting at 11am.

Circuit Training: Training sessions will restart on Wednesday September 8. Sessions will take place on Saturday mornings, between 9 - 10am, and Wednesday evenings, between 6 - 7pm, on the Peggy Wilson Field, in Kildwick. Email heatherlewis6@gmail.com to book a place.

Exercises can be modified for absolute beginners to hardcore high intensity fanatics. No equipment required.

Church news: St Andrew’s Church is organising a fortnight of festival fun, with the theme of celebration and joy. It will be held between September 18 - October 3 and will host over 10 exciting events. Please look out for more information closer to the time.

A Prayer book communion service will be held in St Andrew’s church on Sunday at 8am followed by a family service at 10.45am. A Prayer evening will be held in church on Monday at 7.30.m. The Craft and chat group resumes in St.Andrew’s Church on Tuesday afternoon at 2pm.

Pantomime: Casting is beginning for the annual pantomime at Gargrave Village Hall. The production for the 2021/22 season’s performance is Oz, written by Edward Munday, who has kindly offered to direct too. The Adult - teen principal sign up evening will be held at the village hall this evening ( Thursday, Sept 2) at 7pm. Please can younger members who are wishing to play a stage role in the chorus or would like to audition for any parts meet at the village hall at 6.30pm the following week on Thursday, September 9. As usual the production team is looking for parent volunteers to join

its front of house and back stage crew, whether to help coordinating the younger members of the cast during rehearsals, helping with tickets or having loads of fun as a backstage crew member (no experience required).

Jumble Sale: The annual Jumble sale will be taking place at Gargrave Village Hall on Saturday, October 2. Jumble donations may be brought to the next coffee morning on Saturday, September 11or alternately may be left in the

Station Songs of Praise: Hellifield Station Shed 24 Tearooms and the Methodist Church will host a Harvest Songs of Praise with the Giggleswick and Settle Brass Band this Sunday from 2pm. Come along and enjoy the music and join in with the singing.

Art group visit: The village has been busy recently not just with ramblers but with artists too. An Art group from Derbyshire were staying at Malham Tarn field centre and they arrived to paint at various places in the village.

One in particular chose to sit in the churchyard where they painted the nearby houses with Penyghent in the back ground. No finer sight when the sun is shining which fortunately it was.

Church news: A messy church service will be held in the churchyard on Sunday at 3pm. Please bring along your own sandwiches and fruit.

Mothers’ Union: Members of Ribblesdale Mothers Union and their friends will be visiting Ripon Cathedral on Wednesday, September 8, leaving Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 10am and departing from Ripon at 3pm. Seats are available on the coach, please contact Margaret if you are interested on 07532235193.

Ingleton

Strong Man competition: TNT Fitness held its second strong man competition on August 15.Thanks were expressed to the team which helped move the 1000kg+ of equipment to and from the event, as well as the judges and helpers.

TNT Fitness had athletes from the ages of 14-60+ in age and all were giving 100 per cent and all got huge support from the huge crowd and other competitors.

Esmee Holgate, 15, came joint first in the women’s novice category. She’d been away at a England judo training camp and came in exhausted but all guns blazing to deliver a performance that shocked the crowed and competitors.

Coming third in women’s advanced was Laura Gardner. She threw the log 36.5kg up like a toy followed by the 41kg axle then performed seven circus Dumbbells 22.5kg floor to over head in 45seconds, She came second in this event.

Coming 1st in women’s advanced was one of our new trainers Hannah Baines. She pulled 20 deadlifts at 90kg in 60seconds, setting the standard for the others to chase.

In the men’s section, Jake Tilburn, 14, came in 14th place,. He pulled eight deadlifts at 115kg - a personal best for him.

Coming second in men’s advanced was Guy Downing. In first for a second time was James Tilburn, father of Jake.

Athletes taking part who did not quite make the podium were: Ol French, Dan rose, Matt Holgate, Craig Perkins, Ben Allen, fin Raynor, Yemi Tatham, Debby Kuhlmann, Steph noble, Robyn Crawshaw, Becca Middleton, Pippa Chamley. Also fellow TNT trainer Sharon Rucastle came 12th in the women’s novice.

Langcliffe

Bric-a-Brac: St John's Parish Church in Langcliffe was transformed into Aladdin's Cave for its annual bric-a-brac week. Over £1,000 was raised for the church, and the sale continues until Saturday, September 4. St John's also has hundreds of second-hand books and the bookstall will continue to be open every day, apart from during services. Langcliffe priest, the Revd Stephen Dawson, thanked everyone for bringing and buying. The village was understandably quiet in 2020 when we raised £500 but we doubled that this year thanks to people's generosity. There were some historic and valuable items. All charities have been hit by the pandemic and we have had to postpone improvements to the building.

Lothersdale

Over 50s Club: Lothersdale over 50s met on Wednesday August 25 and were entertained with a slide show by Ray Bartlett entitled Discovering Cuba. The chairperson, Brenda Shuttleworth thanked the speaker and reminded members, that if they want to go on the trip to Oswaldtwistle mills for afternoon tea and shopping, on Wednesday October 20 they should bring £15 to the next meeting which is on September 8 or, alternatively contact Brenda on 01535 630663. This meeting will be an afternoon of Bingo ending with pie and peas. Meetings are held fortnightly at 2pm in the village hall.

Climate Change: St John’s Methodist Church, in Settle, joins Climate Sunday Campaign to act, pray and speak up on Climate Change for COP26. St John’s is holding a Climate Service on September 5 and invites everyone to it. On September 12 Methodist churches at Ingleton (10.30am) and Hellifield (2pm) are holding climate services. On September 16 at 7pm Settle Catholic Church is holding an Ecumenical Creation Service

Alpha Courses: Alpha is an opportunity for anyone with or without a faith to explore life and Christianity in an open, friendly and informal environment. Middletown Allotments: All tenants are invited to a coffee morning at Skipton Middletown Allotments Association community hub at 10.30am on September 4. The informal event is to give everyone a chance to share their ideas on ways you’d like to see the hub being utilised now that lockdown is more or less over. Spread the news and please come along. This is also a chance to meet Max and Spud.

Film Club: Skipton Film Club is back with a new season that starts at The Plaza on Sunday, September 5. The screenings are open to everyone, members and non-members alike. If you do want to support the work of the film club then membership for the season is £5 /( £4 concessions) and gives the member a £1 discount for each film and a monthly update on the club’s activities.

RSPB group: I am pleased to report that the first indoor meeting of the Skipton RSPB group will be on Wednesday, September 8, in the Baptist Church Hall, Rectory Lane, starting at 7.30pm, finishing around 9.15pm. The presentation will be by John Gardner who is a very knowledgeable and excellent speaker and has spoken to us several times in the past. The topic will be ‘Iberian Birding’.
