THE owners of a redundant modern agricultural barn off Moorber Lane, Coniston Cold, are seeking approval that work can get underway on its conversion to a home.

In August, last year, a notification for prior approval for the residential conversion of the barn - now known as Coniston Barn - to a single storey dwelling was permitted by Craven District Council.

In June this year, detailed plans to demolish the barn and replace it with a ‘multi-generational family home’ were refused by the council on several grounds including its impact on the ‘character, appearance and visual amenities of the countryside.’

Now, the barn owners have returned seeking prior approval for a property on the existing footprint of the barn and using its existing ‘structural frame’.

A design statement to the council’s planning department by architects Bowman Riley reads that existing framework is adequate for conversion.

The proposed building will be a mixture of natural stone, masonry breezeblock and timber cladding and a new floor, separate from the existing barn, is proposed to provide first floor accommodation.
