THE date of this picture is around 1907 and is of the bookstall at Skipton Railway Station.

There is a bit of confusion of the name of the gentleman in the picture, but the Rowley Collection website says he was the station master just before he retired.

The posters on the stall refer to the death of Grieg which occurred on September 4, 1907 and a problem with the Anglo-American Polar expedition which happened a couple of days later.

One comment on the website suggests the gentleman in the background to the right is John Alfred Noke. who was in charge of the Skipton railway station bookstall from 1899 to his retirement in 1938.

The gentleman in the foreground may be Alfred Norman who retired in 1908. Frank Mellor was station master in the 1910s and ‘20s.
