EVERY time the Craven Herald includes a mention of Mathew Wilson, MP, whose vastly dignified statue adorns the High Street, Skipton – as this week re: bicycle racks to be placed behind it – I am made to chuckle and remember a story told in David Joy’s booklet ‘Discover Grassington’ (2018).
Sir Mathew, of Eshton Hall north of Gargrave, was made Chairman of the Yorkshire Dales Railway at the age of 22, but he ‘had already gained notoriety as a rake and a ladies’ man. His reputation was not helped when he threw a grandiose party at the hall for everyone from miles around whose surname included “bottom”.
He set his guests to work introducing themselves and then fled the scene.’
I hope this information will spread a little happiness when visitors next encounter the portentous frock-coated figure with the lush sideburns outside Skipton Library.
