THIS old photograph was taken around 1905 and is of Fort’s drapers and clothing shop, in Sheep Street, Skipton.
The impressive double-fronted store sold everything from coats to corsets.
On the Rowley Ellwood Collection website it states the man pictured in the photograph is Arthur, aged 18 who had recently left Ermysted’s to join the family business.
The lady in the picture standing next to him in the doorway is a shop assistant.
The business was sold to Mr Atkinson of Leeds in 1947 due to Arthur’s illness.
Picture reproduced by kind permission of the Ellwood family, Mrs V Rowley, North Yorkshire County Council and Skipton Library.
