THIS is a cracking old photo of the inside of Fred Manby’s garage which was part of the old foundry site in Lower Union Street.
Frederick Manby said: “The garage made at least one car from a self-build guide in Motor or Autocar. I was told this was in the very early 1900s and so would have been one of the first cars in the area but I am unable to say when the garage started and finished. The car seen has a G registration number, issued in Glasgow until 1921. The CW plate on the motorcycle was issued in Burnley from 1904 to 1930. I believe the foundry closed in the ‘30s.
“The man with his back to the camera may be Fred Manby or his brother Tom who were partners. I am sure some Skiptonians will have further knowledge.”
