TREES and power lines were brought down around the district during the night as Storm Arwen hit following an Amber weather warning from the Met Office.

Several roads on high ground around Newby Pass were blocked with snow and further down the district there were trees across roads and flooding causing chaos for motorists.

Thomas Beresford who sent in photographs of the snow and fallen trees said it was 'one held of a wild night'. "Snow, trees, BT cables, power lines, wheely bins you name it you’ve seen it scattered in the road. One hell of a mess to begin to sort out on the roads today to get folk moving again."

Contractors and emergency services have been out all night trying to free up roads.

Settle firefighters found themselves trapped after attending a callout at 8.30pm to a fallen tree in Selside. However, the bad weather closed in on them and the road became blocked at Horton and Ingleton leaving them stranded and out for eight hours.

Elsewhere, people were reporting trees down on the A65 between Long Preston and Settle, with flood water in places, and there was a tree partially blocking the road between East and West Marton on the A59. It was passable with care this morning while it was being removed.

There was a tree down on Raven's Close Brow, by S&W Fabrications, Bentham, which was impassable and two more at Stinking Beck, Wigglesworth.

A tree was reported blocking the road near the church at Reeby's Lane, Keasden, while there were also reports of trees down on the A65 Cave Hall through to Clapham, Horton and Selside.

Another tree down on the road to Ingleton, just before Bentham, while more were down between Embsay and Halton East, blocking the road.

Workers are working to clear the roads but it would be wise to minimise travel until later.

Skipton Fire Station reported on social media: "Crews have recieved 2 call outs this evening/morning due to #StormArwen. Made safe one property due to wind damage.

"Assisted with a vehicle trapped in a fallen tree on the A56 between Elslack and Thornton in Craven. One carriage way now open.

"If anyone is venturing out this morning please be aware of lots of fallen trees, debris, flooding and snow on the roads.

"Reports of roads blocked all across the county. Take Care."

The Met Office says yellow warnings of wind are still in place until later today (Saturday) and then there is a yellow warning for ice from 5pm today until 11am on Sunday.
