RESIDENTS in Settle are trying to come to terms with the death of two friends on Friday with those close to the pair planning a candlelit vigil to remember them.

Friends of Aidan Tomlinson and Callum Lambert have posted heartfelt message on social media following the car crash on the outskirts of Settle near the entrance to Settle Golf Club at around 9.15pm on December 3.

Tragically, North Yorkshire Police said the 18-year old front seat passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The 20-year-old driver was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries.

The force said its thoughts were with both families who are being supported by specialist officers.

Settle town mayor and leader of Settle Town Council, Cllr Dan Balsamini, said he was devastated to hear the news which had left the whole of the town and surrounding area in shock. "It's a real tragedy," he said. I don't know the lads other than in passing but I know that a lot of people in the local community have been greatly affected by their loss. My thoughts are with them, their family and friends in this difficult time."

Friends are now planning a candlelit vigil on Friday, December 10 at a venue to be agreed which will accommodate a large number of people.

Meanwhile, officers from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses following the tragedy.

They are appealing to anyone who was in the area and who may have seen the vehicle prior to the collision to come forward. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage who was travelling along the B6480 towards Settle at approximately 9pm.
