PARTY-goers were invited to ‘dress as you dare’ at a fundraising 80s disco night held at Grassington Town Hall.

Organised by friends Will Binns and Lindsay Hobbs, the ‘It’s a Sin 80s night’ marked Will’s 30th birthday and Lindsay’s 60th birthday, and saw Will appear on stage for the first time as his drag alter ego, Rhaya Sunshine.

Will, who works at The Corner House Cafe in Grassington, raised more than £3,000 for Manorlands Hospice last year by lip-syncing music hits on Facebook, and wanted to follow it up with more fund raising - this time for the Terrence Higgins Trust, after being inspired by Channel 4’s ‘It’s a Sin’ drama about friends tested by AIDs.

The event has so far raised more than £4,000 - with more donations still coming in.

Will said it was an amazing night with so many people very happy to get out after 18 months of coronavirus lockdown.

“I, as Rhaya Sunshine, had my drag debut, we also had another drag queen, Lux, and a couple others did an Abba tribute,” he said.

“We also had some speakers too, one from The Terrence Higgins Trust and one who was a nurse on an AIDs ward in the 80s. It was so poignant and really hammered home why we were raising money for this cause.

“We raised an amazing £4,066 and we’re absolutely gobsmacked at how well supported we were. “Everyone said how great a time they had, and people are calling for it to be an annual event. I think everyone was just so excited to have a night out after 18 months of not being able to do anything properly.”
