THE Orchestra of the Light Music Society is back. And is proud to present another thrilling afternoon concert at Christ Church, Skipton, by young vibrant orchestra presenting some of the very best in light music from radio, television, film, and the stage as well as some Viennese favourites.

The Orchestra of the Light Music Society, now based in Long Preston, once graced the airwaves in the 60s and 70s with performances for the BBC and in collaboration with some of the world’s most famous musicians.

They include Sir Malcolm Arnold and the hard rock group Deep Purple.

The performance early next year, will see the return of conductor Alexander Webb and orchestra leader Matthew Chadbond who will lead the audience through an exciting and emotive programme of light classical favourites.

It will include Calling All Workers; music from The Sound of Music, The Florentiner March - from Brassed Off! - Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, and The Radetzky March.

The society is also excited to announce the return of accomplished soprano soloist April Elizabeth Grime who will be singing music from Die Fledermaus, and Rusalka as well as welcoming some very special guests.

This concert is not only a celebration of some of our most popular and enduring music, it is also a chance to see it performed live by a group of accomplished professionals in much the same way as it would have been performed at the country’s winter gardens, spa towns, and band stands that were popular throughout the beginning and middle of the 20th century.

The venue is also operating a bar and there will be opportunities to meet the society personnel and learn more about what it does.

The Light Music Society itself is custodian of around 40,000 individual pieces of light music that are kept in trust at their headquarters in Long Preston to ensure that people can enjoy the music for many more years to come.

Light music bridges the gap between classical and popular music. It is music with an immediate appeal, music to entertain and to enjoy, with a strong emphasis on melody.

The Light Music Society is a members’ society dedicated to the preservation, promotion and performance of light music.

The concert is due to be held on Sunday, January 16 at 3:30pm at Christ Church, Cross Street, Skipton.
