A GLUSBURN woman ran 80 miles over 24 hours yesterday (Monday) to raise money for a friend who is battling cancer.

Fi Jenkinson is no stranger to fundraising. In 2018 as a member of Friends of Aireville Park, she organised a walk to raise £2,000 for a bench in memory of Jodie Willsher who died tragically while at work in the Skipton Aldi store.

The response to her Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge saw her more than double the target.

The latest challenge saw her test her stamina and resolve as she aims to raise money for Lothersdale man Rob Metcalfe, 30.

She set off to run 100 miles yesterday but an injury saw her having to pull up 20 short.

She explained how the challenge came about: "I first started chatting to Rob when he donated a prize for a raffle to raise funds in memory of Jodie Willsher. He said that he wanted to give back as others had treated him well on his recent lung collapse.

"It turned out that he had in fact got synovial sarcoma in his lung. It's an extremely rare and aggressive cancer and sadly I was very familiar with sarcoma as I had recently lost my brother-in-law to Ewings sarcoma.

"We both have a love of the outdoors whereas I run he is an avid mountain bike rider. Something I have recently started to embark on purely down to Robs posts about how much he enjoys it.

"He has a young son, Caleb, who shares his dad's passion although Rob is now struggling with day to day activities. He is only 30. Having a terminal cancer as a young dad really makes you realise how difficult others' lives are and this is why I'm taking on this challenge again. I did it last year for another sarcoma warrior, Lily, and it's the hardest thing I've ever done."

Fi said the challenge was to run mainly along the canal and complete the distance within 24 hours.

Despite an unfortunate injury, the effort was heroic and her fundraising page has seen a surge in donations and far surpassing her target of £500. By Tuesday afternoon she had raised almost £900.

She said she will continue to raise money for the causes she feels are close to her. The money raised for Rob will help him make memories with his son.
