PLANS to install air-source heat pumps to heat the swimming pools at Craven Leisure, Skipton, have been unveiled by Craven District Council.

As part of its 'zero carbon' plans, the council has lodged plans to replace gas heating at the centre - which of all its buildings has the highest carbon footprint, with air-source pumps. The pumps, which will be housed in outside units and fenced in, will heat both swimming pools at the centre, in Aireville Park, and also provide hot water for the showers. The centre has already seen the installation of solar panels on its roof.

The project is part of the council’s £1.2m zero carbon Craven scheme – half of which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund – to cut the council’s carbon footprint to net zero by 2030.

It has also seen the installation of solar panels and insulation at the town hall and the council's homeless hostel, Aireville House, and at the crematorium chapel.
