ACCESS to some shops and advertising boards on pavements are an issue for people with disabilities, Skipton town councillors have said.

The town council is having an input in a survey being carried out by Craven Disability Forum, even though it was not invited to do so in its official capacity.

Councillor Eric Jaquin, tasked with completing the questionnaire on behalf of the council, said it had been difficult because the survey had been anonymous and had not asked for a name.

He had completed the survey in the council's road safety role he reminded last week's planning committee, and would send in additional comments, made by members at the meeting. The High Street was 'dismal' for disabled people and there were places where there were no dropped kerbs, he said.

Cllr Sheila Bentley said Skipton was 'definitely not wheelchair friendly'.

"I have a friend in her 60s who is in a wheelchair and she hates coming into Skipton because she can't get along the pavements because of the tables and chairs and the signs, and she cannot go on the setts.

"Its very difficult to get into a lot of shops, we are definitely not wheelchair friendly," she said.

Results from the Craven Disability Forum survey, which closed on January 7, will form a report to be presented to North Yorkshire County Council and Craven District Council.
