Horton in Ribblesdale

caroline@sandjsthompson.co.uk

Church news: The Revd Stephen Dawson looks forward to reading out villagers' memories of Accession Day at the service of evening prayer in St Oswald's church on Sunday. The service will be held at 3pm and there will also be the opportunity for the young ( and old ) to make and paint crowns for the accession at the craft table. Stephen has already heard that some people recall that when the announcement came - 'The King is dead. Long live the Queen!' people were shocked and wept openly. Newspapers reported that the King hadn't been seen in public since his operation in September and his gaunt appearance on January 31 when he waved Elizabeth and Philip off at the airport - the trip he should have made - caused concern. When his mother, Queen Mary, was woken early on February 6 she said immediately, 'Is it the King?' The late Billy Lambert of Selside kept diaries for most of his life but being a typical farmer there was no mention of the Kings death ( nor his wife's 30th birthday the day before ) there was however a rough thaw, and he called at the garage with his van as the dynamo was in bad order!

Face coverings are no longer mandatory in any setting but may be recommended in crowded places particularly where you come into contact with people you don't normally meet - baptisms for example. Baptisms will continue to be held outside the main service of the day.

Church news: Settle Parish Church. After being 'laid low' by Covid it was good to have Revd Julie Clarkson, back, leading services in all 3 of her Parishes last Sunday.

There was a style of Christian worship to suit everyone. Starting at 8am with Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer at St Alkelda's, Giggleswick. Later, at 10am, friends from St Alkelda's and Holy Trinity, Rathmell took part in the United Service for Candlemas based on the pattern of worship from the Taize Community. The Taize service was live streamed and is still available at www.settlechurchestube.org.uk . In the afternoon at Holy Trinity, Rathmell, Revd Julie and organist, Graham Toft, led 'Songs of Praise'. Not only did we have a jolly good sing but also Graham and Revd Julie had researched the origins of hymns and tunes - writers and musicians. So we learnt a lot too. Finally, to round off a busy day, we were treated to splendid, homemade refreshments in Rathmell's Reading Room.

On Sunday February 6, to mark the Accession of Queen Elizabeth ll, a local band of bell ringers will attempt to ring a full peal of Plain Bob Triples at Holy Ascension. This is no mean feat. The ringers will begin at 2pm and hope to complete the peal three hours later. For some of our ringers this will be quite a challenge as they will attempt to complete their first full peal. Stuart Heath, tower captain, looks forward to hearing from anyone interested in learning to ring. Bellringers practice at Holy Ascension on Friday evenings. Email Stuart on stuart@stuartheath.net for more details.

We look forward to welcoming Revd Chamil Fernado to preach at the United Service of Holy Communion at 10am on Sunday February 6. Revd Chamil, from Sri Lanka, is presently studying at Mirfield. Sri Lanka is linked with the Leeds Anglican Diocese. 2 years ago before the Covid pandemic Revd Julie Clarkson visited Sri Lanka as a member of the Leeds Diocese Link team. We'll have a good Dales welcome ready for Revd Chamil and look forward to hearing about lives and the challenges for our fellow Christians living in a very different situation to our own.
