A SILENT vigil for peace in Ukraine is being held by Skipton Quakers on the steps of Skipton Town Hall for half an hour at 5.30pm on Monday, March 14.

A spokesman said: "We welcome anyone who would like to join us in showing the support of the people of Skipton and Craven for a country and its people who are desperate for peace. We will think of the political leaders of the Ukraine, Russia and of our own country as they seek a way to end the conflict. We will remember the military leaders on both sides, those involved in the fighting, those fleeing and those who are opening their borders and homes to offer refuge and sanctuary.

"Quakers in Britain call for a cessation of fighting and for all parties to observe international law, including international humanitarian law. All sides should take the earliest opportunity to halt hostilities and to resume negotiations. Instead of war, we need to work to build a culture of peace and dialogue, based on strengthening arms control, peacebuilding and respect for international law. Peaceful cooperation and friendship between the peoples of the world are the only true path towards achieving security and well-being of all."
