GIGGLESWICK School, Settle, is hosting an information event this month for 15 and 16 year olds considering what to do after taking their GCSEs.

‘Sixth Form, then what?’ is usually only open to existing pupils of the independent school, but it has decided to invite all those in year 11, regardless of where they currently study.

Anne Coward, head of sixth form, said:"After some incredibly challenging years for young people, we’ve decided to host an event which will explain all the different pathways open after GCSEs. Parents as well as pupils are often bamboozled by the options available after year 11 and where they can lead. We felt it was important to meet people in person to help them make those choices.”

The event aims to bust common misconceptions about the different pathways. It will look at the application process and requirements for leading universities as well as the medical application process. It will also explore alternatives to university such as degree-based apprenticeships, school leaver programmes and year in industry in order to inform next steps.

Sam Hart, headmaster, added: “Young people of this age haven’t had the same opportunities as those that went before them.

"They perhaps didn’t get a chance to complete work experience, travel or receive visitors to their school. We felt it important to provide as much support as possible to families whose children have big decisions to make over the next few months. That’s why we’re opening up our annual information evening to all young people and their families this year.”

‘Sixth Form, then what?’ takes place at the Richard Whiteley Theatre, Giggleswick School on Wednesday April 27 at 7pm. The event is free to attend, but advance booking is essential. Book at: https://www.giggleswick.org.uk/admissions/events
