CREATIVE children at a Dales primary school have been working with a professional artist to create pictures for a special exhibition.

The pupils from Kirkby-in-Malhamdale Primary School, all aged between three and 11, spent three days working with Malhamdale-based illustrator Stephen Waterhouse. After a talk in school, they joined Stephen on a walk to Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar, plus a visit to St Michael the Archangel’s Church, Kirkby Malham, when they worked on sketches and outline drawings. The fieldwork was followed up with a special art day in school where Stephen helped the children perfect their ideas and improve their skills.

The finished pieces will form part of the parish church’s forthcoming exhibition, Art In The Dale, on show between Friday, May 6 and May16 alongside work by Stephen and other artists, including Fiona Armer, who was also on hand when the children visited the church.

Headteacher Richard Wright said: “The children enjoyed the creative process from inspiration through to making their ideas a reality. Under Stephen’s guidance they have turned their sketches and outline drawings into masterpieces! They will look stunning in the church exhibition.

“Stephen was amazed at the talented artists we have in school and we are very proud of the work and thankful for all the expertise and support that we have received for this project.”
