ENVIRONMENTAL charity Friends of the Dales is launching a new campaign to support the restoration of peatlands and to raise awareness.

To kick off #MoorPeat, the Gargrave based charity has organised two free events for people to learn more about peat and its importance for climate and biodiversity.

An online Zoom talk at 7.30pm on May 18 will be given by Jenny Sharman of the Yorkshire Peat Partnership. She will explore the degradation to peatlands and the consequences to wildlife, carbon store and water quality, along with an overview of the partnership’s work to re-wet, replant and restore peatlands.

A 'peat and poetry guided walk' on Saturday May 21 will take place in Ilkley. Starting at 10am, the seven mile walk will include expert insight from moorland ranger, Jody Vallance of 'Moors for the Future', along with recitals of two of the famous Stanza Stones and a visit to the Poetry Postbox.
