TWO rail fare dodgers who each failed to buy a £7.50 ticket have been fined over £1,000 between them.

Joseph Martin, 30, of Market Square, Settle, travelled between Keighley and Giggleswick on October 14 last year but could not produce the fare when asked. He was sent two reminder letters but no communication was made and the case was proved in his absence on June 20 at Kirklees Magistrates' Court.

He was fined £220 and ordered to pay £7.50 compensation to Northern Trains Ltd, costs of £150 and a surcharge of £34. He must pay the balance of £411.50 by July 18.

Also fined was Daniel Westbury, 43, of Delaney Court, Settle. His case was also proved in his absence at Kirklees Magistrates' Court on June 17 after not responding to a reminder letter requesting payment and a fixed penalty notice which was also ignored.

Westbury had travelled between Settle and Keighley on October 22 last year and also failed to pay a fare of £7.50.

He was fined £440 and ordered to pay compensation to Northern Trains Ltd of £7.50, a surcharge of £44 and costs of £150.

He must pay the balance of £641.50 by July 15.
