Bolton Abbey

Rector’s Message: This is the second Sunday after Trinity. After proclaiming Father, Son and Holy Ghost on Trinity Sunday we are reminded today that God has prepared great riches for us in his Kingdom. All we need to do is respond to His invitation. However, as we all know from Church attendance and our own life of prayer, these things can so easily fall away. We often find excuses not to attend Church and neglect our inner life. The message for us all this Sunday is that if we fail to respond to His invitation then we do so at our peril. The banquet awaits. All we have to do is attend.

Settle

Church news: Settle Parish Church. Many, many thanks to everyone who helped with our successful session at “Langcliffe Teas” last Sunday. It was a very busy afternoon. Plenty of customers enjoying delicious home baked treats. Pleased to report that £620 was raised for Church Funds. Thanks also to our new volunteers who have been cutting the grass in the churchyard. It’s great to have new and younger faces willing to help out. Tuesday and Saturday mornings are probably going to be the favoured times for the small team to crack on with the task of cutting and tidying. But more offers of help are always welcome. Perhaps keen gardeners might like to help tidy the borders round the church building. Please get in touch with Revd Julie Clarkson (01729 825955) or Church Warden John Diggles (01729 825285) if you’d like to help.

Skipton

Church news: Christ Church Sunday at 9.30am - Eucharist. Wednesday 9.30am – Eucharist.

Community Orchestra: This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Skipton Community Orchestra and a special celebration concert, Sounds of the Movies, is to be held on Saturday 2nd July at Christ Church, Skipton at 7pm. The evening is set to be a real celebration of amateur music-making in the town and the orchestra will be joined by The Skipton Choir and Skipton Music Centre. The evening will feature music from films both old and new, including James Bond, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, West Side Story and The Greatest Showman, to name a few. It will be a family-friendly occasion with plenty of opportunities for audience participation, and it wouldn’t be a night at the movies without popcorn. Skipton Community Orchestra was set up by Catherine Davison and Anita Birch in 2012 and has grown over the years to be a real asset to the town.

The orchestra welcomes musicians of all ages and abilities and plays a wide range of music, from classical pieces to music from film and musicals. It is conducted by Jess Mahler, a teacher at Giggleswick School and a talented musician herself, who brings a sense of fun and warmth to rehearsals while encouraging everyone to play their best. The concert is free entry with a collection in aid of the charity, Dementia Forward, which supports people affected by dementia across North Yorkshire.

Christ Church Veg Garden: Sunday school children from Christ Church in Skipton are looking forward to sharing God’s bounty with the help of an innovative scheme that provides fresh, healthy food to the community entirely free of charge.

The charity, Incredible Edible Skipton, installed two raised beds in the churchyard in Cross Street, and over the winter they were filled with soil and compost. In the spring, once the danger of frost had passed, the Incredible Edible team of volunteers supplied the church with vegetable seedlings raised in their polytunnel on the Middletown allotments site.

The idea is that anyone from the local community can harvest the crop whenever they like. The scheme is supported by Skipton Town Council, which maintains the churchyard, and a small team from the church’s congregation look after watering and weeding.

Churchwarden Bill Carmichael said: “It is a fantastic scheme and we are glad to play a part and provide fresh, healthy vegetables for anyone who wants them.

“The crops are doing very well and some are already maturing – so if you fancy a nice fresh head of lettuce, or some kale or Swiss chard, just come along and take what you like.”

No pesticides have been used and the crops are 100% organic, although as with any vegetable it is recommended that they be washed before use.

The Incredible Edible network started in 2008 in Todmorden in West Yorkshire and has since grown to more than 100 groups in the UK and 600 globally.

You can find out more about the charity, and how to volunteer, here www.incredibleedible.org.uk.
