THE National Park is reminding Dales Three Peaks walkers not to rearrange stones they find on the route either into impromptu cairns or to spell out their name.
A two-year-old picture on the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority's website was resurrected in a BBC news story showing the name 'Sue' spelled out using stones on one of the Peaks.
The Authority says people do not realise that the stones they are using may come from monuments and walls that are thousands of years old.
Kate Hilditch, area manager for the Southern Dales said: “Every year tens of thousands come to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
“The Yorkshire Three Peaks are fragile environments and public rights of way network are constantly under pressure. We have an ongoing programme of work to ensure rights of way are kept in good condition and that erosion issues are addressed before they have an impact on the surrounding landscape.
