A SUGGESTION by Skipton's mayor to have an ice rink set up in the town as a temporary winter attraction has received a lukewarm response from his fellow councillors.

Councillor Rick Judge's proposal was discussed at a meeting of the town council, but it was felt it would probably be too expensive and because of the size of the town would be unlikely to attract enough people to make it viable.

The council's events and tourism committee did however agree to look into the proposal and for a report to come back to a future meeting.

Committee chair, Cllr Winston Feather, added that perhaps roller skating might be a cheaper, 'second-best' option.

Hannah Corrigan, events and tourism manager, told last night's meeting there were several options available, including the council itself running an ice rink and for an outside company to do it and charging for people to use it.

She suggested possible sites could be the car park next to the canal basin, off Coach Street, and also the car park behind the now closed House of Fraser Rackham's department store.

Other considerations would have to be the size of the rink and how long it would be in operation.

Cllr Feather said: "It will be very expensive and we are only a small town; I would like to suggest roller skates might be a bit cheaper as second best."
