THE sun shone and the crowds turned out for Lothersdale's village show.

The 86th event, run by Lothersdale Young Farmers Club, was held in a field next to the Old Chapel in Lothersdale and included animal classes, ferret racing, and traditional country fair games, such as dunking and being put in the stocks.

There was a good display of handicraft and produce on show in the marquee tent with art classes, including a photo competition for under 16, with prizes provided by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, and a new competition for the best liqueur. Ahead of the event, villagers were invited to search out any of their homemade sloe gin or elderberry vodka at the back of their cupboards and enter it into the show.

There was also plenty of sheep, tractors, and goats with cattle being judged on the farms in the area a few days earlier.

In the ring, there were dog classes, ferret racing and a performance from the Sole dance group.

Denise Dobson, club leader, said the weather was in the club's favour and shone all day.

She said: "A big thank you goes out to the Smith family for the use of the field, to all our sponsors and raffle prize donators, judges and stewards, and to all the members, advisory, leaders and families who helped with the setting up, taking down and running of the show itself."

Neville Smith, former member, current advisory member and club supporter, presented the trophies.
