THE standing stone near a sunken way, a paved route to church, the first village school next to the 'old road', a field gate post near terraced houses, and a long closed servants' door.

These are some of the features of Carleton which will be the theme of a local history event on Sunday (August 14).

After a three-year break Sue Wrathmell, Chris Judge and other members of Carleton St Mary's PCC will be offering 'tea and history' at the church.

The theme will be paths and gateways looking at ancient routes and unique features of the village. Timber-framing expert Bob Greaves will show his models of timber framing, a reminder of buildings once common in the area. There will be talks, a display of maps, records and photographs, and tea and home-made cakes. It will take place from 2pm to 4pm, finishing with a walk round the village. Donations of £5 per adult will be invited for church funds.
