Austwick W I: Margaret Watkins joined us for our August meeting. After a brief introduction to her varied life, particularly that in the Salvation Army, she went on to describe how she had become in possession of ‘Aunt Edna’s’ hats. Members demonstrated the wide array of types, styles and sizes of hats that she had brought along and great fun was had by all. The next meeting will be on Thursday September 8th, in the Parish Hall at 7.30pm when Brian Cowie will talk about the work of The Cave Rescue Organisation.

Film Nights: Once again the film nights in Austwick Parish Hall recommence on Friday 9th September doors open at 7.00pm for performances commencing at 7.30pm. Ticket sales at Cross Leigh Store and on the door. Film features will be advertised near the time, however dates in your diary:14th October, 11th November, 9th December, 13th January 2023, 10th February, 10th March.

Bentham

Show: Bentham Agricultural Society holds its 148th traditional agricultural show on Saturday, September 3, at Bentham Auction Mart. Cattle, sheep, goats classes; eggs; horticulture; handicrafts; children’s classes, vintage vehicles, fun dog show, craft stalls. Sadly no poultry classes due to the ongoing avian flu outbreak. Giggleswick and Settle Brass Band will be performing from midday. Gates open 10am. Adults £6, concessions £5, children £1. Cash only.

Gardening on the Peggy Wilson Field: People are invited to come along on Saturdays between 2pm and 4pm to help work on the School’s wildlife plot on the Peggy Wilson field. No experience necessary, but any horticultural wisdom would be welcome. Many tools will be available on site, but you might want to bring your own gardening gloves.

Refreshments: The “Coffee & Crumbs” refreshment van is providing take-away hot drinks, cakes. 9am to 3pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Located in a field near the tow-path in Kildwick, just beyond the Priest Bank Road bridge.

Yorkshire Harpist: Fiona Widdop `The Yorkshire Harpist` will be bringing a special performance to Gargrave Village Hall on Friday evening. The concert is a special collaboration between the talented husband and wife team. David writes words and music about fascinating characters from his past and Fiona who has designed and made more than thirty harps will be providing the music. Her musical arrangements are unique, earlier this year she performed at The Great North Folk festival in Whitby and was given rave reviews. Tickets for the concert which begins at 7.p.m until 9.p.m are £10.00 which includes a complimentary glass of wine. North Craven Flower Club: The next meeting of the Flower Club will be Thursday 8th September at 7.30pm in the Institute. The guest demonstrator will be Derek Morgan with a demonstration entitled ‘In the Frame’. Visitors are always welcome. Come along and get the chance to win one of the arrangements to take home. Also, the Flower Club will be doing afternoon teas in Langcliffe Village Hall on Sunday 11th September from 12 noon. There will be cream teas and a wide variety of homemade cakes, as well as a tombola and a sale of flower arranging accessories.

Stanfest: The Stanfest charity fundraising event will be held this coming Saturday from 1.30pm in the Black Horse Car Park. The event, which was first held last year, is a tribute to the late Stan Gray who was a local musician and a great supporter and fundraiser for charities. There will be side stalls and attractions, plus hospitality and food and drink provided by the Black Horse Hotel. Music will be provided by local musicians and Dale’s Disco. All funds raised at the event will be donated to charity.

Wesley Centre: The Sunday service at the chapel will be from 2 pm. There will also be a prayer meeting from 6 pm. There will be a Drop-In Lunch from noon today in the centre. The Welcome Mat group will meet on Monday the 5th September between 2.30 and 4 pm. The children’s group Helitots will meet on Tuesday the 6th September from 9.30 to 11 am.

Art group: The Heliarts group will meet in the Institute on Tuesday 6th September from 2 pm.

Parish council: There will be a Parish Council meeting in the Institute on Wednesday 7th September from 7.3pm.

Hellifield House: There will be House Bingo this coming Sunday from 6.30pm. All welcome. The next Quizgo session will be Wednesday the 7th September from 8.15pm. All invited to come along and join the Quiz.

Horton-in-Ribblesdale show: The show will be back on Saturday after a two year break. The event will be held in the old school and adjoining field. There will be well supported sheep classes, showcasing a number of breeds and an indoor section displaying the very best in confectionery, crafts, horticulture and much more. The judging of the sheep classes will be from mid morning and the school will be open for viewing around lunchtime. Please bring along your dogs and pets on the day so they can take part in the dog and pet show which will be judged just after lunch. Refreshments will be available all day. Trophies presented around 3.p.m.

Church News: St Michael’s Kirkby Malham. After the success of a similar event during lockdown, our processing challenge returns again this year. Skipton RSPB Group: The first indoor meeting of the new season will be on 14th September 2022, in the Baptist Church Hall, Skipton starting at 7.30p.m. The speaker will be Professor John Reilly, from Sheffield. He is an author and has studied the evolution of birds for many years. The presentation is entitled - New Guinea, Evolution of Paradise, a fascinating subject. Admission is £4 which includes refreshments. Everyone is welcome.

Bridge Club: If you are facing evenings alone, like the idea of trying something new, or would like to make new friends, a warm welcome at Skipton Bridge Club is guaranteed. Beginners sessions are starting on Monday 5th September at the Swadford Centre. You don’t need to have played before, you don’t need a partner and you don’t have to be elderly or wear pearls. Turn up at 1930 for an informal , no-obligation session that runs until 2100. The sessions will be on the first and third Monday of each month. New members are also welcome at our regular weekly Tuesday and Thursday duplicate bridge evenings. Arrive at the Swadford Centre at 1845 so we can be ready to start at 1900. £2.50 per session. Civic Society Environmental Group: Open evening at Skipton Town Hall on Wednesday evening 7th September from 6.30-8.0pm. There will be a presentation by David Smurthwaite and Fiona Protheroe from Skipton Town Council about the Craven Strategic Plan for the environment. This will be followed by Professor Rick Battarbee from Addingham Civic Society, who will explain some of the ‘green’ projects already carried out in and around the village. The aim of this event is to encourage various groups and organisations to work together to make the town greener. Current projects of interest include the amphitheatre behind the Town Hall, Rackham’s car park, window boxes for domestic and businesses premises, flower tubs, green walls, green roofs and where possible, some trees.
