SKIPTON Triathlon due to take place in Aireville Park this weekend has been cancelled as a mark of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth, Craven District Council has said.

A spokesman for Craven District Council said: “In light of Thursday’s sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II we immediately took the decision to cancel or postpone all events on Craven District Council land and venues in the official 10-day period of mourning as a mark of respect.

"We understand that this will be very disappointing for those participants who were planning to take part in Skipton Triathlon and for all those involved in the organisation of the event which should have taken place on Sunday, September 18. We will work with the organisers to rearrange the event for a future date.”

However, a number of events are still taking place. Grassington is continuing with its 1940s weekend this coming weekend, while the Nidderdale Show, at Pateley Bridge, will take place this year on Sunday, September 18, instead of the advertised day of September 19.

It is also understood the Park Run will still go ahead in Aireville Park on Saturday.

Last Saturday the Hodder Valley Show went ahead as planned. Organisers said before the show that Queen Elizabeth visited the valley and the Whitewell Estate as part of the Duchy of Lancaster and that the show went ahead on her land in her honour.

Bus operator Transdev has also announced it will be running a service on Monday but with a a Sunday timetable.

Craven District Council said its offices will be closed on Monday, September 19, the day of the Queen's funeral allowing staff to pay their respects. In line with traditional bank holidays, Craven Leisure and Skipton Town Hall will also close for the day and all waste management services will be suspended for the day. Therefore, there will be no commercial waste bin collections taking place on Monday, September 19. Normal service will resume the next day. Household waste collections will be operating as normal next week so please continue to put your bins out as usual on your collection day. Apologies for any inconvenience caused but we are sure you can understand these are exceptional circumstances.
