AN award-winning book written by a double Paralympic gold medallist from South Craven has been released in paperback.

Run Like a Girl – penned by Danielle Brown – showcases the inspirational stories of 50 sportswomen, examining the challenges they’ve faced and the hurdles overcome to achieve success.

Sportswomen featured range from boxing superstar Nicola Adams to record-breaking yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur and mountain biker Rachel Atherton.

Danielle – who overcame her own challenges and adversity to become a double Paralympic gold medallist and five-times world champion in archery – outlines the achievements of the women, together with what motivated and influenced them.

Earlier this year, the lavishly-illustrated Run Like a Girl – which is aimed at children aged seven to 11 – was victorious in the children's category of the Sports Book of the Year awards.

It was a co-winner in its category with Striking Out, by Ian Wright and Musa Okwonga.

Danielle said she was "delighted" at her book's success.

She added: "When I was growing up, I can’t remember seeing many female athletes on TV.

"I didn’t read about them in books, or hear about them in the playground.

"There were no visible coaches, referees or support staff either.

"I wanted to shine a spotlight on some amazing female talent and change the way we talk about women in sport.

"There are so many incredible athletes totally bossing it and achieving amazing things, providing boys and girls with empowering role models that show them what can be achieved when you dare to dream big and keep pushing through."

Danielle, who grew-up in Lothersdale and attended South Craven School at Cross Hills, took-up archery with Aire Valley Archers when she was 15.

She was the world number one for her entire career and made history when she became the first disabled athlete to represent England in an able-bodied discipline at the Commonwealth Games, and won gold.

Danielle now works as a keynote speaker, specialising in self-development, success skills and breaking through barriers.

The MBE recipient also works with young people to help them improve their academic performance and mental wellbeing.

In 2019 she co-wrote a book providing a motivational guide for children. She penned Be Your Best Self: Life Skills For Unstoppable Kids with youngster Nathan Kai.
