A SILSDEN community centre has received a £1,000 boost.

The Hive has been awarded the cash from Tesco's community grants scheme to support its wellbeing cafe, which aims to bring the community together – tackling loneliness and isolation.

Formerly the community bees cafe, the initiative is particularly aimed at older people and new mums.

Centre manager, Jill Cook, says: "For small charities like us, grants such as this enable more people to be helped and make a bigger difference in our community."

Claire de Silva, for Tesco, says: "Our community grants scheme helps support local good causes like The Hive and especially those supporting young people and projects close to our colleagues’ hearts."

The grants programme – formerly Tesco Bags of Help – is run in partnership with the charity Groundwork, which awards funds to thousands of community projects every year. Since the scheme started, more than £90 million has been distributed between 40,000-plus beneficiaries.

Graham Duxbury, for Groundwork, says: "Tesco community grants continue to give local projects the boost they need to help their communities thrive. We are pleased to have been able to help so many good causes over the years."
