M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film is a thrill.

Adapting Paul G. Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World, Knock at the Cabin stars Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) and Ben Aldridge (Pennyworth) as doting couple Eric and Andrew. Paradise falls for the pair while holidaying in New Hampshire with their adopted daughter Wen, who is played here by Kristen Cui.

While many families choose populous all-inclusive resorts as their getaway idyll, Andrew and Eric take Wen to a cabin in the woods. It’s remote, peaceful and a long way from help. Then comes the knock.

The premise here is tidy and explosive. It’s a mind player and lingers in the mind. Bringing Andrew, Eric and Wen’s holiday peace to an abrupt end are Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abby Quinn and, in his first major release for almost a decade, Rupert Grint. They bring a message, a warning and an ultimatum. The apocalypse is coming and can be averted only by the sacrifice of Andrew, Eric or Wen.

Having peaked so early with The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan’s career nosedived through the noughties.

Indeed, it’s only in recent years that the likes of Split and Old have reminded of his remarkable ability to unsettle. Knock at the Cabin does nothing to diminish this upward trajectory.

The film is an edge of the seat gripper. It hooks early and pummels with a surprisingly emotional finale. Unshackled from his Marvel restraints, Bautista is particularly excellent.

Also out this week, Puss in Boots is back!

Not since 2011 has the Antonio Banderas voiced, sword-wielding feline graced cinemas. The beloved Shrek export has enjoyed a six season Netflix TV spin off in the intervening years but it’s on the big screen he really belongs.

From DreamWorks stalwart Joel Crawford, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a joy and thunderous return to form for all involved.

On waking from a particularly raucous party, Puss is horrified to learn he has used up eight of his nine lives. Urged to retire, Puss instead opts to embark on an epic quest to restore them.

Salma Hayek is back as Kitty Softpaws, with Harvey Guillén joining as therapy dog Perrito. Florence Pugh is a force to be reckoned with as Goldilocks, with Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone and Samson Kayo her three bears.

It’s swashbuckling good fun. Don’t miss it.
