A CREATIVE bread masterclass with a Michelin-starred chef was on the menu for children at Kirkby Malham Primary School.

Michael Wignall, chef patron of The Angel at Hetton, showed pupils how to make focaccia bread decorated with locally-sourced ingredients and helped the youngsters to craft their own creations.

Along with members of his kitchen team Mr Wignall inspired and encouraged pupils from years two to six who were able to take home their own dough masterpieces.

Mr Wignall said: “It was an absolute pleasure to work with such interested and enthusiastic young chefs at such a fantastic school. I think it is crucial for children to learn about food and the importance of preparing and eating fresh ingredients and it was a delight to play a part in this during the school day.

“We would like to thank Wellock’s for their kind donation of the ingredients for the event – we work closely with them as they deal with local growers. Using the finest ingredients and respecting those ingredients is a vital part of everything we do.”

Mr Wignall brought along the dough and toppings. He turned them into an edible work of art which the children were able to recreate and adapt with their own ideas.

Headteacher Richard Wright said: “It is an absolute honour to have our neighbouring Michelin-starred chef work with our children. The Angel at Hetton is renowned for its fabulous food and great hospitality and we are certain some of the leading chefs of the future will have been inspired by what they have experienced today. We would like to say a huge thank-you to Mr Wignall and his team for giving up their time and sharing their expertise and passion for local food.”
