Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: The Sunday marks the beginning of Passiontide. Passiontide is the traditional English name for the fifth Sunday in Lent and marks the beginning of the two-week period before Easter Day. We now overlap Lent and Easter and intensify our preparation for Holy Week. The title ‘Passiontide’ reminds us that this season is about the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Over the next fortnight we will travel with Christ into Jerusalem and all the way to the cross. The good news, however, is that Passiontide does not have the last say. This sombre period of preparation soon ends and our hearts can then rejoice in Christ’s resurrection on Easter Day. It is worth reminding ourselves this Sunday that, however bleak things look in the world, Christ will eventually be triumphant.

Environment awareness: How ‘green’ are our villages and what more can we do? Saturday 25th March 2023, from 2pm-5pm in Embsay Village Institute Hall. Do come along and take part in this free environmental awareness event, organised by the Community Library and the Fairtrade Group, and supported by funding from NYCC, the Parish Council and the Village Institute Management Committee, who have waived the hire charge for the hall and supper room. The aim of the day is to showcase what we are already doing in our villages to care for nature and the environment, and to ask ourselves individually and collectively what more we can do to reduce carbon emissions and protect the planet. We are hoping that the afternoon will generate sufficient interest to form a local Environmental group, to consider and lead on new initiatives.

All of the village groups actively engaged in caring for and improving our surroundings, creating spaces for encouraging wildlife and for increasing our wellbeing and the safety of our human and non-human community, will be showcasing their activities. The guest speaker from Addingham, is Professor Rick Battarbee, who was Professor of Environmental change at University College London and former director of the Research Centre there. He now chairs the Addingham Environmental Group and leads a citizen science project on the ecology of the River Wharfe. He will speak for twenty minutes.

There will be storytelling in the library, craft activities in the Supper Room, activities in the Pre-school Playgroup outdoor area, a display of art work by Embsay schoolchildren, and Fairtrade refreshments available throughout the afternoon.

Something for all age groups, informative, free and fun. Don’t miss it.

The trail takes you around the village where you will see some wonderful Easter displays created by the villagers who live along the route. Older children will solve a series of clues along the trail to spell out a phrase whilst younger children will play a game of spot the characters that appear throughout the trail. The event will be the sixth annual Easter Trail hosted by Embsay With Eastby Pre- School Playgroup whose manager Judith Robinson says “The annual Easter Trail is a lovely community event which is great for all the family and which raises funds that are vital to the success of Embsay with Eastby Pre-School Playgroup at this challenging time”. All entrants will receive a prize handed out by Peter Rabbit and all correct answer sheets will be entered into a prize draw with participants being in with the chance of winning an even bigger prize. There will be drinks, breakfast sandwiches and cakes available at Embsay Village Hall and there will be a host of activities for the whole family including face painting and a chocolate tombola.
