SKIPTON Town Council has appointed one of its members to be its forces champion.

Cllr Winston Feather was elected to the new role at last week's annual meeting of the town council held at Skipton Town Hall.

The meeting also approved the holding of seven civic events for 2023/24 and the buying of wreaths for each one, with an estimated cost of between £20 and £25 each.

In addition, there will also be white peace poppies for the Remembrance Day service on November 11.

The days for 2023/24 are: Armed Forces Day, June 24; Falklands Day, June 14; VJ Day, August 15; Merchant Navy Day, September 3; Remembrance Day, November 11; Parade Sunday, November 12, and VE Day, May 8, 2024.

The white poppy has been worn in the run-up to Remembrance Day for around 90 years, as a symbol of remembrance and peace.
