Airton

Quaker Services: Quakers in Airton are holding their regular quiet meetings for worship every Sunday at 3 pm, in the ancient Airton Quaker Meeting House near the Green in Calton Lane, Airton. All are welcome in this the earliest Non-conformist place of worship in the country, dating from the early 1600s. Our next meeting for worship will take place next Sunday, 16th July, followed by refreshments afterwards in the Barn. The Meeting House remains open during the week if you are ever looking for a place of peace and quiet when the world around us is so turbulent.

Pop-up Cafe: For a few weeks in summer there will be a pop-up café on Mondays in the Barn next to the Quaker Meeting House by the side of the Village Green in Airton. The Town End Tearooms in Airton are closed on Mondays so that there will be an alternative for a limited period from 24th July to 4th September. It will offer tea, coffee, soft drinks, packets of biscuits and home-baked cakes for local people and visitors alike. Donations will be invited to cover the cost of providing the provisions, with any surplus going to support the ancient and historic Quaker Meeting House.

Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This is the Sixth Sunday after Trinity and the focus is on conflict. The Old Testament recalls the first murder with the story of Cain and Abel whilst the New Testament reminds us of the commandment that “thou shalt not commit murder”. The readings are as relevant today as they were all those years ago. Once again, we are living in violent times, with conflict in both Ukraine and Israel. Indeed, it is difficult to see a just and equitable solution to either conflict. However, the New Testament also reminds us of the words of Christ who calls upon us to be reconciled with our neighbour. Differences are as old as time itself but, as Christians, we must continually try to find a peaceful solution. In our charged political world, this could not be a more timely message for us all.

Settle

Church news: Parish Church. We were very pleased to welcome Year 1 children and staff from Settle Primary School into church last Friday afternoon. They came to look round the building as part of their work on different places of worship. Revd Julie Clarkson wore her 'robes' and explained the significance of each item of clothing and the 'furniture' of the church. The children asked 'good' questions, learnt a lot, joined in and enjoyed Revd Julie's explanation of baptism. They each lit candles to place on the candle stand and listened to a short Bible story. Thanks to Stuart Heath (Tower Captain) and the bellringers they were also able to venture up into the Ringing Chamber. Although quite 'short of stature' one or two of them had the opportunity to chime a bell. Our bellringers are always happy to have new ringers. However Stuart suggests that slightly older children, Year 7 or 8, would make good recruits.

We look forward to the pupils and staff from Settle Primary School visiting church again on Friday 21 July for their End of Year service. It will be an emotional occasion as say 'goodbye' to the Year 6 children who face their next adventure at secondary school in September.

Services: On Sunday 16 July there are 2 services at Holy Ascension. Morning Worship at 11am and our monthly Café Church takes place at 3pm. We look forward to welcoming 'locals' and visitors to our services. On Sunday there'll be 2 opportunities to chat and enjoy refreshments.
