THE Yorkshire Party has suggested the county hosts the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Victoria, Australia, backed out.
Party co-leader Bob Buxton said: “What was the last major international multisport event to be hosted in Yorkshire? This is a unique opportunity to showcase the county and celebrate our sporting history, especially since women’s cricket is included and Rugby Sevens is a regular feature.
“Cost is obviously a serious issue, as is timeframe – we cannot expect a host of new venues to be constructed in time. The answer is to use mainly upgraded existing venues. It is also an opportunity to invest in infrastructure upgrades.
“Let’s showcase Yorkshire – with a proud history of sport, a diversity from across the Commonwealth and huge potential growth.”
